What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon

As your due date approaches, one of the most helpful things you can do to feel prepared is to pack your hospital bag in advance. Whether you're a first-time mama or adding another sweet baby to your family, having everything you need ready to go can make a big difference in your comfort during labor, delivery, and those precious first newborn cuddles.

Since many of my maternity and newborn photography clients in Saskatoon deliver at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, I’ve put together this guide with thoughtful suggestions on what to pack, based on both personal experience and feedback from fellow mamas.

Essentials for Mom

👜 Important Documents

  • Health card and ID

  • Hospital paperwork

  • Birth plan

👚 Comfort Items

  • Loose, comfortable pajamas or nursing gowns

  • Maternity robe (especially if you're planning fresh 48 photos!)

  • Nursing bras

  • Non-slip socks or slippers

  • Postpartum underwear (the hospital provides mesh ones and they were the God send but you may want to bring your own)

  • Comfy going-home outfit (something maternity-sized)

🧖‍♀️ Toiletries

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush

  • Lip balm (hospital air is dry!)

  • Dry shampoo, hair ties, face wipes

  • Nipple cream (especially helpful if you’re breastfeeding)

  • Pads or adult dipers (the hospital provides some, but bring your preferred kind)

For Baby

👶 Newborn Essentials

  • 2–3 sleepers or onesies (NB and 0–3M sizes just in case)

  • Swaddle or baby blanket

  • Hat and mittens

  • Socks or booties

  • Diapers and wipes (the hospital provides diapers , but bring extras if you prefer a certain brand)

  • Wipes ( They don’t provide anymore)

  • Going-home outfit

  • Approved infant car seat (installed in your vehicle)

  • Vaseline

Extras That Are Really Nice to Have

  • Your favorite snacks (especially for your support person!)

  • Water bottle with straw

  • Phone charger (extra-long cord is handy)

  • Small fan or cooling spray for labor

  • Camera (though if you're booking a newborn session, you can leave the pro shots to me 😉)

  • Playlist and headphones

For Dad or Your Support Person

  • Change of clothes

  • Snacks, water, and toiletries

  • Phone and charger

  • Pillow and blanket (hospital extras are limited)

Bonus Tip for Photo-Ready Moments

If you're planning to book your newborn session soon after delivery, or even a Fresh 48 session, consider packing a neutral-toned swaddle, a simple bow or hat for baby, and a light robe or gown for yourself. Soft tones and natural textures photograph beautifully and create timeless, heartfelt memories.

Wrapping Up

There’s no “perfect” hospital bag—only what’s right for you. Packing early (around 35–36 weeks) can help you feel calm and ready for the big day. And once your baby arrives, don’t forget to reach out to book your Saskatoon newborn photography session with me—because those first moments are too beautiful not to preserve.

If you have any questions about preparing for your session, what to wear, or when to book, I’m always here to help 💕
